Valentine’s Day is for everyone

from Mary Jo

Valentine_roses Happy Valentine’s to all!

Like Jo, I’m not a huge fan of the obsessively commercialized holiday that raises expectations and creates disappointment.  (I had a friend who thought of Valentine’s as validation for her whole life, and was crushed if her current boyfriend didn’t live up to her sky-high expectations.  Not healthy!)

But the original tale in one of its forms has an imprisoned bishop sending his flock little messages saying "I love you" scratched on heart-shaped lilac leaves.  There are many, many variations on the legend of St. Valentine’s, so I like to interpret the day as one where we appreciate all those we love.  In honor of that, here’s a link to a Dear Abby column that ran two days ago showing the lovely way an engaged couple celebrated Valentine’s day:  http://www.uexpress.com/dearabby/?uc_full_date=20070212

And today’s Dear Abby column has another story of a special kindness:  http://www.uexpress.com/dearabby/  So whether you’re single or coupled, thinking of romantic love or more full-spectrum love, may all you Wenchlings you give and receive some special happiness today–

  1. Those stories were absolutely beautiful!! What a terrific post Mary Jo. ^.^
I’m going to pass them on to my family, ’cause I think that we all need to remeber that love should be celebrated on more than one day a year…and that romantic love isn’t everything that this day stands for. If you have family or friends, Valentine’s Day is for you too.
Have a great day everyone! Keep warm and hug someone near you.

Wonderful post. Thank you for the links to Dear Abby. What wonderful stories. I loved the one about MeeMaw.
The girl who surreptitiously helped MeeMaw out of a jam reminded me a bit of you. Thank you for your generosity.
Happy Valentine’s Day, Mary Jo. Keep warm.

  9. Kathy and Nina–
I’m glad you enjoyed those stories as much as I did. I love hearing about kindness and good people. There are a lot of both around, though we don’t always hear about it. I think that most of us Wenchlings would buy the tickets for the grandma and her kids so they could have their lunch. It’s nice to do a good deed!
