The Sparky Report #4

RedSparky1
Sherrie, here. Sparky continues to grow like a weed on steroids, and new aspects of her personality keep emerging. The latest is her behavior at mealtimes. She's normal when eating dry kibble, but give her canned food and she turns into Frankenkitty, often growling and slapping the floor with her paw, as if to ward off potential food thieves.

Which is ironic, because Sparky herself is the biggest food thief in the house! I dare not leave my food unattended, or when I return, it's to find Sparky buried up to her eyebrows in my supper. There's nothing like returning to the table to find the straw missing from your water glass and kitty footprints on the rim, or find her slurping up the last bite of food on your plate! Here are some recent pictures of her finishing off, respectively, water, cake, and Brussel's sprouts.

And after Sparky has stolen my supper, the little thief then steals my chair. She's decided she likes my big overstuffed recliner, and after sitting on her accidentally a few times, I've learned to look before plopping down. She may grumble when I remove her from the recliner so that I can sit, but the grumbles soon turn to purrs when I let her sleep in my lap! One thing's for sure: there's never a dull moment when Sparky is in the room!

  1. Sparky is looking all innocence today! My two cats will both eat anything and everything that they can steal – one will even jump up on the counter and steal vegetables off of the cutting board! They also wait patiently at my feet for coconut pieces to fall from the raw macaroons that I make. The only food safe from them is fruit.
    Thanks for another Sparky installment.

  6. I love Sparky! She needs the wet food right now. Be sure she gets all she wants to eat. Little kittens know what they want and won’t overeat. You are so lucky to have that precious little one. Hug her for me!!

  11. I absolutely agree with Connie Fischer (above) regarding food. Having lost two cats to kidney failure in the tainted cat food debacle in 2007, I did tons of research when I got my two current guys from the shelter the next year. Here is one of the most informative texts that I found:

    Dr. Lisa Pierson
After some trial and error, I settled on Wellness canned chicken food. My cats love it, are super healthy and have coats like minks! Lazy girl that I am, I have cases of it delivered and believe it or not, it is actually cheaper than buying local (delivery is free).

  16. Sparky is beyond precious! And beginning to look very like my resident feline menace Miss Rebecca Marie.
Like Sparky, Rebecca is a terrible food thief and not only does she steal from me, she steals from her canine brothers.
It is such a joy to see Sparky thriving!

I totally agree with Connie Fischer (above) about food. Having lost two cats to kidney failure due to the tainted cat food debacle in 2007, I did a ton of research when I got my current two guys from the shelter the next year. The following was some of the most complete information that I found:

I ended up going with Wellness Chicken canned food. Both of my guys love it, are super healthy, and with coats like minks! Lazy girl that I am, I buy it on-line by the case and have it shipped. Believe it or not, it ends up being cheaper than buying local and shipping is free!

  26. Donna, Typepad’s spam filter did indeed eat two of your comments. I have liberated them, but in doing so, it looks like you had already retyped one of them, so there may be a duplicate. No matter, your message was worth repeating regarding cat food.
WARNING: The following verges on fanaticism where pet foods are concerned, so non-fanatics may wish to skip! *g* OTOH, if you are a cat owner, this is important information.
Donna, like you, I’ve done extensive research on pet foods because I was disgusted that most grocery varieties contained corn as the first ingredient. I wanted a better quality food, where meat and meat meal were the first ingredients. Wow, talk about an education! I am now a dedicated label reader, and only feed top quality pet foods that contain meats as the first two ingredients and that don’t contain corn. I buy my cat food at Petco and Petsmart, both of which have a better variety of high quality pet food. I am currently feeding Sparky the following kitten foods:
DRY: Organix Grain Free Healthy Kitten; Simply Nourish Kitten Food; Canyon Creek Ranch Chicken & Brown Rice Mix
CANNED: Innova Cat & Kitten Food; Blue Basics Sensitive Solution Formula Kitten Food; plus 2 others whose names escape me as I’ve tossed the empty cans.
I feed a variety of flavors, to keep meals interesting, and yes, I feed dry kibble as well as canned (though I hate the clean-up, the messiness, and especially the smell of canned, so eventually Sparky will mature get a variety of high quality free choice kibble only, with plenty of fresh water).

  31. Connie, good advice on feeding Sparky all she can eat. Her main meals currently consist of canned food, but she has kitty kibble free choice, so she can eat whenever she wants to. I also let her sample people food for variety, since she’s always sneaking my suppers anyway. She loves Brussel’s sprouts, grated carrots, and canned mushrooms!

  36. Donna, thank you for the article on cat food by Dr. Lisa Pierson. I agree with much of what she says, though for practical purposes some of it doesn’t work for my situation. That’s not to say her article hasn’t value. It does, and she imparts an important message regarding pet foods. We need more informed people like Dr. Pierson to educate pet owners on pet nutrition. I’m going to print out her article so that I can read it more thoroughly. Due to time constraints, I only skimmed.
I’m glad to hear you give your cats “treats” like veggies and coconut! Whenever I’m in the kitchen slicing and dicing or mixing and stirring, Christopher is at my feet, ready to pounce on anything that drops from the cutting board. He adores fresh grated carrots, and if I give him any leftover green salad with Italian dressing, he’s in hog heaven.

  41. Louisa, your Miss Rebecca Marie sounds like Sparky in the food theft department! I figure most cats enjoy variety in their meals, so the occasional human food won’t hurt them, and in fact may be good for them. Miss Rebecca Marie obviously knows this. *g*

My cat, Mitzi, aka Mitzer, goes for the grapes. She can eat a bowl of ’em. Or if I’ve finished my grapes, she delicately hooks a paw around the stem and runs off with it. Very strange eating habits. She’s been known to hop on the table and (try) to munch off the dish. I have learned through (tragic )experience not to turn away from the table and leave food unattended. It doesn’t stay that way long. She’s also been known to drink from my water glass. Mary Jo suggested I give her a glass dish instead of a big metal bowl, and that seems to have cured the problem. Mitzer is just a never-ending delight – as your Sparky seems to be. I agree with whoever posted the comment that Sparky seems to be growing into her ears. Give her a hug and a nose rub from me!

Mitzer is just a never-ending delight – as your Sparky seems to be. I agree with whoever posted the comment that Sparky seems to be growing into her ears. Give her a hug and a nose rub from me!

  51. Binnie, I’m beginning to think Sparky has a few relatives out there with equally strange (or at least thieving!) eating habits. Your Mitzi/Mitzer sounds like a sister under the skin! I’ve never heard of a cat eating grapes. I’ve read that raisins are taboo for cats, and especially for dogs (something about causing kidney problems), but I don’t know if that’s true for grapes. Obviously it hasn’t hurt the Mitzer!
Like you, I don’t dare leave food on my plate, or Sparky will do a face plant and scarf down the goodies. I have a picture of her stealing my Cheetos just after she was weaned! It’s partly my fault–due to remodeling I don’t have anyplace to eat but my desk. The kitchen counters are off limits to the cats, but not my desk. And Sparky knows it. *g*
And how clever of Mary Jo to suggest using a glass dish for Mitzer’s water! As luck would have it, I use a small Pyrex custard dish for Sparky’s water. Still, she does sneak my own water on occasion. I now check very carefully before drinking, because there’s nothing worse than finding specks of kitty litter in the bottom of your glass AFTER you’ve had a drink! (TMI!)

  56. You know, our old cat had his own chair. Heaven forbid, if anyone else sat on it! Once one of our neighbours had made that mistake and the way our cat stared at him… If looks could kill! But the neigbour was a smart man, he apoligised our cat and found another chair to sit on.

  61. Annette, I didn’t think Sparky would be interested in Brussels sprouts either, but there was one left in my bowl and she ate it with relish. I suspect she was actually after the butter on them, but who knows?
I love Brussels sprouts, so let’s see if she does it again the next time I fix them!

  66. I love that Sparky likes brussel sprouts!Years ago over here in the uk there used to be an advert for a tinned cat food called arthurs it showed a large white cat eating out of the tin with his paw.Well my mother in law reckoned they had seen her large white cat Fred because he used to sit on the draining board while she podded peas and help himself with his paw out of the collander.I didn’t know about cats and corn but I know you have to be careful how much a dog has as it will make them hyper active especially batty spaniels!!I had to be very careful what biscuits he had and avoided dried food like the plague.

  71. A cat that ate peas? Of all the cats and dogs I’ve had over the years, all of them have hated peas! So your MIL’s cat, Fred, had to be unusual in his culinary habits!
Yes, many “premium” cat and dog foods list corn or a corn product as the first ingredient. I avoid them like the plague, and I read ingredient labels all the time. I’ve even been known to caution complete strangers as they reach for X-brand of pet food that is low quality. Sadly, most people just go with what’s cheap, not realizing that health and behavior issues can result from feeding poor quality pet food.
Sorry. I do get militant about pet foods. When I volunteered at the local humane society, we had a cadre of folks who baked carrot or peanut butter doggy treats, and we used them as rewards during training. They were very healthy, and the dogs loved them! I have an elderly Doberman on medications, and I poke the pills in a dollop of peanut butter and she just scarfs them down.

You may be right about Sparky being part raccoon. She’s a voracious eater and believe it or not, I’ve found bits of her kibble floating in her water dish, so maybe she was trying to wash it first!

  81. Dear Ms. Holmes,
My Mum can attest to the angst and anguish of sorting out cat food — we spent the greater part of 9 years attempting the near-impossible to sort it out ourselves! 🙁 Many late nights were spent on the road, going from one town to another to sort out which had which food in stock or inventory. Special orders and a running tab at Mr.Chewy.com [now: Chewy.com] were had! I do not wish anyone ills when trying to sort through this particular nightmare, nor anyone to experience why cats insist on waking the household up by 3 or 4AM! Oy.
Sparky is dashingly growing into a big kitten! Wow. She’s lit alive with life and all the love your giving her is feeding her soul! I was going to tell you about my childhood cat, of whom lived to be 16 years!! I caught her in her golden years noshing on my mac & cheese whilst I went to answer the phone! I had no sooner grabbed the line, swung around to a ‘strange sound’ and caught her with CHEESE in her whiskers!! OHh my dear goodness! The sight of a cat with cheese all over her face is one for the books!!! 🙂 🙂
Many blessings to your lovely house of paws!!

  86. Hi, Jorie. LOL on your cats waking you up in the wee hours! That’s precisely why I’ve always had a separate room (spare bedroom) for my cats, where they eat and sleep. At night, when it’s bedtime, I stand up and say, “Okay, everybody out of the pool!” The dogs then trot to their beds in the laundry room, and the cats trot down the hall and into their bedroom. I then close the door on the cats, so that they cannot roam around the house at night, getting into mischief. *g*
Macaroni and cheese! A pure temptation for cats. I’ve often caught my cats with angelic faces belied by their cheesy whiskers.
