The Cats’ Christmas

Spook SnoozingChristmastide:

The Cats' Christmas

by Mary Jo

This is second in the Word Wenches' annual tradition of short posts for Christmastide, Reggie Intriguedthe days between Christmas and Twelfth Night on January 6th.

I don't usually get presents for my cats since they're royally pampered every day. But this year I decided to get a tall, very stable scratching post.  I opened it up, attached the base, and rubbed catnip into the sisal.

And furry fun was had!  Spook, the solemn white and gray part Siamese cat who has never shown the least inclination to play, had fun with it, delighting in the catnip and snoozing happily on the base.

Reggie was intrigued and scent-marked the sisal.

But Princess Flufferbella stretchingFlufferbella had the clearest understanding of what the post was for as she stretched and scratched.

Here's hoping they continue to enjoy their new scratching post, and spare my furniture. <G>

Mary Jo, wishing you all a happy holiday season and a bright New Year!

  1. A very Merry Christmas, Mary Jo. I enjoyed seeing your cats with their new ‘toy.’ We usually don’t buy gifts for our Jazzman either but bought one of those cardboard disposable scratching pads with a silly shape covering it this year. Our daughter-in-law to be gave me the idea as this has become ‘a thing’ with her for the last several years, i.e., a spooky house for Halloween, a taco truck etc. I chose a van decorated for Christmas and crossed my fingers, since our ‘Senior Citizen’ hasn’t shown a great deal of enthusiasm for toys recently. Still scratches the carpet on the stairs, alas. Well, he loves it. Whew, score one for me.
It’s pretty ironic we put this much thought time effort feelings into our pets needs and happiness. But, there you go.
I’m always behind in my email so by the time I read the WW posts the conversation is long over. But I still love reading the posts. Wishing you and all the Wenches a much happier 2021 than 2020 gave us. God bless us all.

  6. Not showing this to my cat. He’s been spoilt by my neighbours 22 presents and counting. But he’s pleased it’s Boxing Day.

  11. I buy catnip for Loaner Cat, but she likes to eat it so putting it on something like this would not make her happy. This is what she looks like afterward though, passed out from the stuff. Thing 2 calls it ‘boatin’ because she’s on her back like a boat in the water.

You do know they now make clear plastic corner guards for furniture? I understand they work great and save your couch and chair and don’t come off until you take them off.
Anyway, Happy Boxing Day which has come and gone for at least one of you, but it still here for the rest 😉

  16. Love it when you show pictures of your cats. I have several scratching posts located throughout the house and most of the time by baby uses them instead of the furniture.
Happy holidays wenches and readers. Wishing everyone health, happiness and peace for the new year.

  21. I do love cat (and other pet) conversations. As I have mentioned before we decided we were no lonter being capable of being fair to our pets. So out only contact these days is contact with furry friends that others own.
We do have a virtual kitten that is owened by my Grandaughter — they live about 1000 miles away, so even without Covid-19 we won’t see much of them (except through the magic of internet!).

  31. Michelle–our cats are our friends and don’t we want our friends to be happy? I’m glad the Jazzman enjoyed your choice–I didn’t even know that scratch boxes came with silly shapes! I do know that some of my cats like scratches, and one or two much prefer my furniture, alas!

  36. LOL, Theo! That is one beautiful content cat. *G* My experience with corner guards is less than successful, though. Flufferbella will just move on down from the corner. I’d have to encase the sofa with plastic.

  41. Well, some cats are pretty determined LOL
Loaner cat is now 15 years old. You’d never know it since she’s going through her second childhood as evidenced by my hand that she must chew on at all costs! 😉

Though our gifts weren’t under a tree, my husband gave me a wonderful cat-themed CD, Cat Tales: Songs of the Feline Persuasion, by Cindy Mangsen. One song, “Rudy’s Big Adventure,” depicts the night a kitty named Rudy got his head stuck in the sink disposal. I promise a happy, uninjured ending, but the journey is hilarious and the lyrics are very, very clever.
