Silk and Shadows in Audio!

Silk and Shadows Audioby Mary Jo

I've promised that audiobooks of my Silk Trilogy were on the way, and now the first, Silk and Shadows, is available with Silk and Secrets and Veils of Silk on the way.  Once more the wonderful Siobhan Waring is the narrator, as she has been for all my audio releases for more than a year.

I think of Silk and Shadows as my Count of Monte Cristo story.  The first sentence of the book is, "He called himself Peregrine, the Wanderer, and he came to London for revenge."

Here's the blurb:

Like the falcon he named himself for, Peregrine is wild and free, an exotic prince who fascinates 1839 London with his wealth, mystery, and dangerous allure. He emerged from his mysterious Asian past to exact retribution for an appalling crime. Nothing and no one can stop him—except perhaps Lady Sara St. James, whose fragile beauty conceals a gentle heart, genuine goodness, and a soul of steel.

Unable to resist his seductive charm, Lady Sara turns away from her ordered life to embrace a man she loves, but cannot fully trust. In Sara, Peregrine sees a chance for a life beyond revenge. But can he keep her without revealing his devastating secrets? Or protect her from the enemy he has vowed to destroy?

Peregrine is one of my darkest, edgiest heroes, and his redemption through love makes this a very powerful story. But doing an audiobook brought up new questions, such as what does he sound like? He's described as speaking fluent English but with a faint, hard to define accent.  After several discussions, we decided to base his accent on that of an Anglo- 41DoUDxXvPLIndian actor with just the right amount of exotic.

If you follow this link, you'll be taken to my Silk and Shadows audio page, which will lead you to a page with more information, including a sample.

Along with producing the audiobooks, I decided to do a new set of covers for the Silk Trilogy.  The old ones were done in 2013, I think–positively prehistoric!

I'll be giving away several free audio codes to people who comment on this post within the next couple of days. As always, you have to download the app for Authors-Direct, which is easy.  You need to have an IOS or Android device (like an iPod or Samsung telephone.)  You can't use the codes on a computer.

Good news!

I was delighted that my distributor, Findaway Voices, now has codes that can be used by Silk and Shadows Audiopeople in the United Kingdom and European Union as well as the US, Canada, and Australia!  The more global, the better!

I'll let you know when Silk and Secrets and Veils of Silk are released.  Soon, I hope!

Happy listening–

Mary Jo

  1. I love audiobooks and it is important to get the voices right. Sometimes the voice doesn’t feel right and ruins the story for me. Happy to see your older books now as audiobooks.

  6. Rosanna Crawford, you are so correct about getting the voice right! I’ve used Siobhan Waring for so many of my books because I love her voice and her skill at doing different voices. She’s English and virtually all of my books are set in England, so that’s a good match.
I’ve been slowly working toward getting all my backlist books into audio. It takes time and money, but I want them to be available for those readers who really like, or need, the audio format.

  16. I am a devoted audiobook listener and I am particularly demanding when it comes to a narrator. I must hear a narrator who knows how to complement the story instead of drawing me away because the voice or pacing just do not work for me. Happily, I have already listened to two of your recently recorded books and enjoyed both the stories (of course) and the performances. Siobhan Waring is excellent. I am so glad you continued to use her talents for your books.

  26. I bought it from Audible UK and its great.
The Authors Direct restriction to Android and IOS seems a bit limiting …. unless you like to listen on a mobile.
Looking forward to the other books soon. 😊

  31. Quantum, I’m glad you enjoyed the audio of this book! I don’t know why the ios and android limitations–it may be technical, or it might have to do with legal stuff like licenses and territories. Luckily a lot of people do use mobile devices, but I’ve wondered if someone could play an Author-Direct audiobook through an app downloaded onto a desktop computer.

  36. Hi MaryJo, I’m so glad you are committed to providing audio versions. The time, hassle, and expense could be strong deterrents if you weren’t so determined! But it’s all worth it. I still adore being “read to” as much as when I was a child, and listening can make mundane tasks, travel, and exercise refreshing instead of draining.

  41. Hi Mary Jo!
Any word on when Silk and Secrets will be on Audible? I am chomping at the bit for it, seeing as it’s my fave right after TRatR and Sunshine for Christmas. 🙂 So far, it’s only on Author Direct and Nook Audio.
