Seven Windows

Window1Anne here, standing in for Mary Jo, who will be blogging on the 26th instead. And because I suspect you've heard quite enough from me in the last week or so, I'll keep this one short and sweet.

When I was I rummaging through my old photos for Jo's Ask a Wench post last week, I found quite a lot of views from a window. I do love a room with a view. And that inspired me. So here are several views from windows of my past, and I'm going to make this a little competition — a kind of visual quiz — and ask you to guess where each the window is from. There are clues at the end of the post.

Window 1  (on the right)

Window2

Window 2 on the left
   So cute and round.

Window3a

Window 3

Yes, it's a painting – extra points if you can name the artist.

Window4

  Window 4

  A view of the sea

Window5a

Window 5

Far from the sea but so pretty.

  Window6

 Window 6

It's pretty obvious how much I like looking out at the sea, isn't it?

Window7a

Window 7 — This is a collage photo taken from a backpackers hotel window.

I was in my David Hockney collage photo stage at the time.

Look closely. Can you work out what city I'm in?

Your Clues: Two windows are from the USA; one is from a world famous   imaginary village; one is a citrussy window from Europe; one is where I go on my annual writing retreat; one is a painting (extra points if you know the artist), and one is my photo collage — can you guess the country or the city?

Can you guess any of these windows? I hope it's not too hard.
*I've just woken up and with only 4 comments clearly it was much too hard. So here is another set of clues. Window 1 is a citrussy window from a famous art building in Paris, where you might also find waterlilies. Window 2 has already been guessed correctly (yay Katya) — think small people who live in houses with round windows — a famous novel and movie. Window 3 has also been guessed correctly (and no Mary it's not cheating to check). Window 4 and 5 are in the USA – one is in LA and the other is near a place Americans like to remember. Window 6 I have posted on this blog before – a place where I go annually. Think Writers Going Backwards.  And Window 7, the collage one — Mary Jo is on the right track. Or should that be the left track?

Pop your guesses into the comment section.

I'll put the answers up on Wednesday in the comments section.

  1. Anne, you’re really good at creating quizzes, and I’m REALLY bad at puzzle solving! I recognize the retreat photo so I won’t say which it is. The photo collage is probably a country where they drive on the left. The UK? I wouldn’t bet money on anything but the retreat window. *G*

  6. Well, I really flunked this one. The only one I recognized was the Henri Matisse painting – and I had to look that up on-line to make sure I was correct. Since I’m flunking this anyway, I guess it doesn’t hurt that I cheated a little.
Love the pics anyway, especially the first one, with the tree outside the window.

  11. I think I know the round one. I would place that at Matamata, New Zealand.
As for the others, I might perhaps guess the retreat and have no clue about the others.
    Definitely a fun post, though.

  16. Anne, you need to turn comments on for your Blogger one. Because yes! Please! I would love a writing ‘workshop’ kind of blog from you, but wasn’t able to answer your question on the other blog.
And I am at a loss for your windows except to say they’re all wonderful. 🙂

  21. Thanks so much for that Theo — It’s been a headache getting access to that blog account, and I hadn’t realized I’d have to redo the settings. But I think it’s all okay now.
As for the windows, I think this might have been a bit too hard, but I’ve also added in some extra hints.

No 7 is London or maybe Bath
4 & 5 are in the States, but not sure about the other 2

  31. So with the new hints I can now take an educated guess about number one. Citrussy is actually a very good description, now that I know what it is 😉
Or could one perhaps say “A window in the national colour of the Nederlands”?

  41. Well, I’m not a very good quiz person but I love pictures of windows & the view from a window. I also love pictures of doors & entryways. That might be weird, but I think not since you see so many pictures & prints of them. Loved all these pictures!

Window 1 is from the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, where you can also see the wonderful Monet waterlily murals. Katja gave a very clever response — “I can now take an educated guess about number one. Citrussy is actually a very good description, now that I know what it is 😉 Or could one perhaps say “A window in the national colour of the Nederlands”?”
Window 2 is from the pub in the village of Hobbiton, in New Zealand, constructed for the movie Lord of the Rings
Window 3 is a Matisse painting, Room With a View
Window 4 is taken from a hotel on Manhattan Beach in LA. Maryellen, you were right — it is in California.
Window 5 is, as Janet said, a view of the Riverwalk in San Antonio, from the Mokara hotel where I stayed once.
Window 6 is the view from my annual writers retreat, on Australia’s Gold Coast. Mary Jo recognized it, as it’s been featured on this blog before.
Window 7 , the collage photo, is from a room I rented in London. The clue was in the cars driving on the left, the enclosed, railed garden, and also a glimpse of tall Victorian terraced houses. Mary Jo got the country.
I hope you enjoyed this little piece of whimsy. Thanks to all those who joined in.
