  6. I went ‘d’ right through. It sort of works: a spy might be imprisoned by the French, and escaping – in order to get home and not break his promise – might throw his lot in with pirates on the way. And a heroine with the audacity to marry to escape school sounds fun. Unlikely to break into tears perhaps; but then again, they could be tears of frustration, at loosing her immensely wealthy duke. (Romance readers would empathise: we know exactly how tricky it can be to land a handsome Duke.)
The real mystery is Aunt Agatha’s lack of reaction to the whole imbroglio. My theory is that she is some sort of elderly spymaster – think Judi Dench in the Bond film – whose machinations first placed the hero into the boarding school, and she has engineered the whole thing for… plot-provoking reasons.

  61. I failed every answer!! It was a completely different book for me 🙂 one Anne can always write!
I thought that Rose decided to marry just because she didn’t want to wait too long, so Aunt Agatha was delighted when Rose failed to marry in such a loveless way, then that she slapped her husband while the furious duke tried to sack him from the church. Having been a Spy the mysterious husband was imprisoned by the French and after a daring escape he became a pirate. But he had to come back being unable to break a promise. Ah! She married him in the first place because in her ignorance she was afraid to be pregnant…. How does it look? If I were able to write interesting dialogues I would try to write a story 😂😂😂 cheers! Thank you Anne for giving me such a funny little time, in a hard time for me

But I think I should get a half point on No. 5 – I had ‘furious”, rather than “irritated.” I was thinking privilege and dignity, that the scorned duke would be a lot madder than merely “irritated”. Irritated might not even show 🙂
Whichever. I do love a good Abandoned Bride story 🙂

I might have got #1 right…but I don’t think I would have improved any of my other answers!

  102. 3 right. Missing 7, inevitably meant I missed 8. I almost felt I should have gone and read the Amazon blurb before I began the quiz.
I might have got #1 right…but I don’t think I would have improved any of my other answers!
Looking forward to reading this book when I get it one way or the other.

  106. I actually got 8 right. From the description of the man, it sounded like he would have looked a bit like Robinson Crusoe, so some of the answers just flowed.

  111. Anne – What a delightful quiz! I got 7 out of 10 right.I was surprised that he was a sailor rather than a soldier. I had fun imagining how Aunt Agatha must be aching to deliver (to Rose) a blistering tirade.Perhaps she tries to force an annulment, so that Rose can still marry the Duke. (More prestige, typical of Aunt Agatha.) I found myself wondering why Thomas needs/wants to have control over Rose’s fortune. I also wondered if there might be some redemption for the Duke. In any case – can’t wait to read the actual book. Now I’m about to have breakfast, although regretfully, there’s no mournful hound waiting to dispatch a piece of burned toast.

  126. Shoot Fire, I only got 3 right. Evidently my heart is more romantic than Rose, her Aunt, the Duke or the secret husband.
I created an entire story about undying love and love even after death (or assumed death) a man who could not possibly abandon the wife of his heart.
Shows what I know. And from my own personal life, I should have realized my idea was never gonna happen.
I do think I need to get this book though, so I reckon you have hit the nail on the head with this quiz. You have created a buyer.

  131. Oh Annette, Annette, have faith. I’m a true romantic at heart too, and your idea is closer to the mark than you know. But characters need to discover things about themselves, and so the way they might be at the start is never how they end up. <3

  136. Binnie, you’re pretty close to the mark in some areas — though of course I’m not saying which ones. I’m also about to have breakfast, though my canine companion won’t get toast, but instead will be gnawing on a fresh meaty bone.

  141. LOL Amie, love your metaphor for life. But this is, after all, fiction, where heroes might behave badly at the start, but unlike in life, they learn and change and improve.
