On the Sixth Day of Christmas

IceskatingPat here, wishing everyone a wonderful winter!

I'd meant to find six geese a laying, but lacking Photoshop skills, I had to give up the task. And these gowns are much prettier than geese. I'm sure this is an image of a romance opportunity in the making. Poor gentleman, going down before all the lovely misses! Don't you think one will run to his aid?

I used to love ice skating but I'd probably break every bone in my body if I tried it now. How about you, do you ice skate? How are you spending your chilly winter days?

  1. I gave up ice skating at the ripe old age of 12, after having sprained my ankle 3 times in 7 days. I could no long stand on those thin blades.
So now i agree with Mary T: I spend my time reading..

  6. I do love to ice skate. My city has a nice indoor rink and my favorite time to go is in the summer. It’s less crowded and the cool air on the ice feels great. For winter, I too prefer to stay home with a book.

  11. I share my name with a three-time Olympic figure skating champion, but l’ve never skated in my life. (It’s a very hot summer here at the moment – skating sounds like a pretty good idea.)

  16. My mother-in-law finally, and very reluctantly, gave up ice skating at 85! That was 10 years ago and she still speaks wistfully about the joy of moving so freely. It’s a joy I’ll never know – walking across an icy parking lot is scary enough! I can’t wait to show her this post – she grew up in Vermont and praises the virtues of a muff for hand-warming. She’ll love the one in your drawing, Patricia!

  21. If I could wear those outfits, I’d try ice skating again! And it’s absolutely marvelous that your mother has kept her balance, and it may be because of a lifelong training on the ice. I did love skating back in the day, but my ankles were always too weak.

  26. I live in MN so winter is an old friend. Last Saturday we had a huge ice storm and kids were skating down the sidewalk and having impromptu hockey games in the street. Might as well…school was out and nobody was driving . My first skates were at age 3, my brothers learned then too, but not my children. My husband never skated and he was terrified that our kids would break their necks. He won the “but they MUST learn” argument. I loved to skate despite weak ankles and remember fondly trudging to the rink after school to skate for hours before dinner. A warming house gave us respite, but not for long. We enjoyed the biting wind and crisp air as we sped around and around. My skates have been retired and I no longer whirl around the ice, but the thrill is always in me. I did love it so.

  31. Skating is something I admire in others…rather like curly hair or being tall.
I have straight hair, I am not tall at all and learning to skate is not something I have ever done.
But, since Peggy Fleming was skating in the Olympics, I have admired everyone who has that talent.
And I wonder if judges would count off if a contestant came dressed like the beautiful young ladies in the picture?

  36. LOL! I think some of the skaters have tried the fur-trimmed costumes but short seems to be what gets notice. I admire all athletes–just think of the gymnasts! I figure Im fortunate to walk straight.
