Anne here, and I'm excited to announce that The Autumn Bride has been made into an audio book. That's a first for me, and I'm really thrilled about it.
I love audio books now, but for a long time they didn't appeal to me at all. When I was a child I used to love being read to, but that stopped not long after I learned to read. It wasn't that people stopped wanting to read me a bedtime story — it was me, being greedy and impatient. I could read much faster than they could speak, so I fired my parents and older siblings from bed-time duty and read the books myself.
And apart from the occasional radio serial I did all my own reading for the next umpteen years. I have friends who take it in turns reading books to each other. They love it. Not me.
It was a really evil paint job that converted me to audio books. I have an old house and at the time I couldn't afford to renovate it, so I was sprucing it up myself. I'd used a steam machine to remove a glowing metallic feature wall from the lounge room and four walls of frolicking donkeys from the study.
Now it was time to attack the moldering vestibule/entry hall. Small space, small job, I thought.
Hah! Turned out there were 3 or 4 layers of wallpaper, and each one had been painted over at some stage and then papered again. I don't know what they'd put on those walls over the years, but it was made to stay. I tried everything the guys at the paint shops could suggest. The only way I could shift it was to peel and scrap it one shred at a time. So first thing Saturday morning, I started.
The time c-r-a-w-l-e-d. By 10.30 am I felt like such a martyr. Hours of scraping and hardly anything to show for it. Worse, it was the last long weekend before winter, everyone else had gone away to the beach or the mountains or the bush and the weather was absolutely gorgeous. And there was I stuck indoors in the vestibule from hell: scrape, scrape, shred, shred, martyr, martyr.
Then I recalled that I'd borrowed an audio book of a favorite author from the library, only because it was the one book of his that I hadn't been able to get. I pulled it out and started listening. . . Hours later the book was finished, and somehow, almost without me noticing, a heap of wall had been scraped clean. The time had flown; I'd been miles away in the world of a book.
So I whizzed off to the library and borrowed a pile of audio books. By the end of the weekend, the vestibule was clear of shreds, washed, sanded and ready for a coat of sealer — and though my arms were aching, I felt like I'd spent the weekend reading. Magic.
Now I'm still impatient for the story and my preference is still to curl up with a book and devour it in one sitting but when I'm doing a mundane chore or driving long distances, I love being read to.
So now one of my books had gone into an audio edition, and though I would have been happy with any of my books being chosen, I am so pleased that it's The Autumn Bride, because it fits with the story.
There's quite a bit about books and reading them aloud in this book, and it starts when Lady Beatrice, bedridden but still feisty discovers a new pleasure — books read to her by the heroine and her sisters. And when an old friend visits, and Lady Beatrice asks her to wait until the chapter is finished, her old friend is stunned.
“You’re reading books now, Bea? Good heavens! Well, of course I don’t mind, if that’s what you want.” But though she allowed herself to be seated in a comfortable chair by the fire, it was clear she thought the request a peculiar one.
However as Abby read on, Lady Beddington edged forward in her chair, twisting her shawl into a rope, listening eagerly, until by the end of the chapter she was perched right on the edge of her chair, hanging on every word.
When Abby finished the chapter Lady Beddington fell back in her chair, exclaiming, “Bless my soul, I never knew a book could be so entertaining.”
“I know,” Lady Beatrice said. “Before these gels came to live with me, I can’t remember when I last read a book. All the books I’d ever been made to read were dreary, improving things, full of morals and lessons and homilies or facts—and that’s when I could understand the dratted things. But Abby and the gels always find the most thrilling tales, and the only thing that’s improved when we’re finished is my mood.”
The audio edition of The Autumn Bride goes on sale on 18th Feb. I haven't heard it yet, and I suspect it will be a bit weird hearing my own words read back to me, but I can't wait.
So what about you? Do you enjoy having someone else read to you? Do you listen to audio books or not, and if you do, what do you enjoy about them?
And where is your favorite place to read or be read to? (The painting on the right and the one above of the girl in the hammock are by E. Phillips Fox, one of my favorite Australian painters, who painted in the late 19th/early20th century.)
I'll give a copy of the Autumn Bride (paperback version) to someone who leaves a comment
I prefer to read to myself, but that’s because I do better with seeing things rather than hearing them. I can read in the car, but my daughter can’t, so when we go on road trips, we always bring audio books (of books she’s already read) to listen to on the drives. Saves my husband from having to listen to the pop music my kid prefers. My favorite place to read (especially when it’s cold) is in bed and the rest of the time on our big comfy sofa.

The only “reading” I got to do when my kids were little was audiobooks in my car during my commute to work. I have only recently gone back to them during a long drive this past vacation and now use it as a way to catch up on a new series I have just found. There are some great audiobook narrators out there who make it sound like a full cast of actors reading to you.

I love audio books. I have many CD’s and I have even more on my computer that I download from Audible. I use them in the car, when I am baking bread and when I exercise. The narrator makes all the difference and I do have my favorites.
One of the best with several narrators is the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. These narrators make the characters come alive. Simon Prebble, who has done many of Stephanie Laurens books, has an addicting voice and I could listen to him for hours. Davina Porter is another great narrator. Lisa Burgett did Rosamund Pilcher’s Winter Solstice and did a great job with voices.
I could go on and on but will stop here as there are many good narrators.

P.S. I hope they do the rest of your books in audio I love the Devil Riders series and the Merridew Sisters.

I’m like you in that I prefer to read rather than to listen. However, being read to is sometimes about the company and the coziness of family or good friends. But, yes, I do get impatient. Some years ago when I had more time (and no RSI) I used to do handicrafts listening to audiobooks of my favorite authors. These days I don’t even own a functioning MP3 player, unless they still make cd’s? Although, having just acquired a car for the modern age, maybe I can start listening in the car if they still have audiobooks on cd… Something to check out. Congrats on the audio release!

Congrats on your new audio book! I’m addicted to them. Noting having time to read as much as I like, I listen to audio CDs in the car while commuting to and from work, while gardening and taking walks when I walk alone. I probably listen to 50 each year.
Hopefully libraries will carry it!!! I’m so excited for you!!!

I love being read to in languages other than English, which is a little weird, right? I just can’t get into audiobooks, but I can understand their appeal.
Congratulations on your audiobook release!

Congratulations.
A couple of years ago, my sister stayed with me while I was ill and read to me much of the time when I was awake. A first since childhood and very soothing.

I prefer reading to listening to audio books, although I make an exception for Richard Armitage reading Georgette Heyer and for authors reading their own work. I also like to read aloud, especially poetry, which I think asks to be heard.
Congratulations on the new format, Anne!

I love audio books… well except for the time I almost ran into a ditch laughing.. Skipping Christmas by John Grisham. I listened to it long before the movie was made… well worth the time!

I love books and though I don’t care how I get the information out of them really, audio books are perfect when I’m on another test drive. Eight hours in a pre-released vehicle that won’t be available to the public for another year or two can get boring very quick. There are only so many times you can document the same problems/concerns/issues. So the audio books are a perfect companion and I can usually finish one a drive. I do shorter drives as well and listen then too. But it is a lot easier than trying to read while I’m driving… ;o)
I’m KIDDING! Never would I do that! I don’t even like to be on the phone when I’m driving.
Can’t wait for this one and I agree, I’d sure like to see your other series out in audio as well.

My only experience with audio books has been Richard Armitage reading Georgette Heyer (SIGH!) and the nonfiction book WHATEVER YOU DO, DON’T RUN : TRUE TALES OF A BOTSWANA SAFARI GUIDE by Peter Allison.
I have several of dear Richard reading Georgette Heyer and I often fall to sleep at night listening to his voice. And the Peter Allison book is an absolute gem! Hilarious and thrilling and the person who reads it (name escapes me at the moment) is perfect!
For the most part I prefer to read for myself. I hadn’t thought about putting an audio book on while doing chores. It might help!

I love to read books; holding them, smelling them all adds to the enjoyment. I have tried CDs when driving but, find that I get so wrapped up in the story that I fear my mind is no longer on the road !! If I do take a long trip, any CD I play is non-fiction, one that will not take me out of myself.
I have never had anyone read to me,as an adult, so do not know how I would like it.

Debbie, I think I’d prefer to read a favorite book myself first, too, but for repeats, audio would be fun. I once listened to a Georgette Heyer story — not read by Richard Armitage, alas — and loved quoting various lines along with the reader. Such fun. It wasn’t even a favorite Heyer, but I surprised myself with how much I remembered.
Lucy, listening to stories on long drives is wonderful, I agree. Before I discovered audio books, I used to listen to the ABC while driving (Australia’s answer to the BBC — not sure what the US equivalent is) and they’d have readings, plays and books serialized on radio, on the nationally broadcast band.

Priscilla, I must listen to the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society on audio. I loved that book. Thanks for those other recommendations, too. A good narrator is so important, I agree. I’ve had favorite books read by people who are all wrong for the book, and I can’t bear to listen.
I hope they record my other books, too — thanks for the kind words and good wishes.

Dee, my friends who read to each other love it. Whenever they make a long trip or go camping or canoeing, they take a book and take it in turns to read. It’s part of their evening ritual, and they say it also helps to keep them both awake in long trips. I can’t read in the car — I get car-sick.
You can probably play audio books on your computer — I know I can on mine — and you can probably burn them onto a CD if that’s your preference..
Thanks for your congratulations, Dee, and thanks too, LilMissMolly for yours. wow, 50 a year — that’s fantastic. I hope your library gets it in, too, and that you enjoy it. Thanks for dropping by.

Julie, that’s so interesting. Are you multi-lingual, or is it a relaxation thing. have you tried listening to an audio book while doing a really awful and mindless job? I can recommend it. 🙂
Thanks for your good wishes.
Liz, what a kind sister. I hope you’re fully recovered now. Thanks for dropping by.

Janga, I’m going to have to get some of those Richard Armitage audio Heyer books — they sound like the perfect combination.
I do agree with you about reading poetry aloud. At uinversity we had this ancient emeritus professor who was simply known as The Old Prof, and he’d recite poems by the hour — and have us all spellbound. to this day I can see and hear him reciting “Lord Randall, my son…” His lectures were always packed — word would go around the university that he was lecturing at 10am and everyone — english student or not and lecturers and professors included — would go.
He also spoke Old Nose and AncientIcelandic, and could recite great screeds of Norse Sagas, which were hypnotic to listen to. He also told a story once about how he met a Danish vulcanologist in a bar in Reykjavic and they spent the evening drinking and making up dirty ditties in Ancient Icelandic and Old Norse, and falling about laughing, much to the bemusement of the others in the bar. He was a wonderful character.

Cate, I haven’t heard that story, or seen the movie — and clearly I need to. Thanks for the recommendation.
I did laugh myself silly listening to Terry Pratchet’s Hogfather and Reaperman in the car a couple of times.
Theo, I didn’t realize you did test driving. How interesting. It’s funny, isn’t it, how easy it is to drive and listen, but like you, I find it much harder to talk on the phone — I don’t do it. I always pull over if someone rings me.
Thanks for the hopes for my other books. Let’s hope this one sells well enough to justify more.

Louisa, it definitely helps make a dreary chore go faster and more pleasantly.
I can see I’m definitely going to have to chase down a Richard Armitage Heyer. So you’re sleeping with him, eh? *g*
Alison, I usually only listen to stories on trips I’m pretty familiar with — my guess is that for tricky navigating or an unfamiliar road, especially of the back country lane variety, I’d have to turn it off for later so I could concentrate.
I’ve never tried a non-fiction audio book. I might follow up Louisa’s recommendation. Thank you both.

I’ve not had someone read to me since I was a young kid (& didnt read that well yet). I’ve never listened to an audio book before, I’m not sure I’d like it. I love reading in bed; that was it doesn’t matter if I fall asleep reading; quite a common occurrence! It’s so hard to put the book down even when my eyes are all droopy.
Love your books Anne, I cry everytime I read Gallant Waif.

I can completely relate to a house with layers of wallpaper. Our house had more than one room with multiple layers in them. The kitchen was the worst with five layers. That would have been wonderful to listen to books while I was doing all that scraping but, alas, my children were little then so they would never have allowed me to follow a story for any period of time. I don’t often go on long trips by myself but when I had to pick up my son from college I took out a book on tape from the library and it really made the drive so much more enjoyable.

Linda, I’m like that‚ will read into the night, completely hooked, even if I know I’m so tired and will pay for it the next day.
Thanks for your kind words — i still get a thrill when people say they read and remember Gallant Waif — it was my first book and still dear to my heart.
Oh Maureen — isn’t it shocking to have to wade through all those layers? My sympathy. And with little kids! You’re a true heroine.
Thanks for sharing.

I do not care to be read to. Like you, I was greedy and read for myself when I was little. I still like reading to myself. Audio doesn’t seem to “take me away”. I like to read in my favorite chair or in bed. Dee

Over 20 years ago, when I was doing the everyother weekend drive from Charlottesvill, VA to Fayetteville, NC I always had an audio book on. Since then, I’ve not really listened to them. By my mother-in-law, who lives in the country and has to drive long distances to get anywhere, does and loves them.
Congratulations on your audio book!!

I tried listening to an audio book once years ago, but decided that it went far too slow, and so they weren’t for me.
But now I have an hour of driving (half an hour each way) every day, so I’ve been thinking about giving audio books another chance. I’m afraid I’ll get too distracted and hit something, though, so I guess I’ll just have to try one and see.

I am a hand quilter and have found that listening to an audiobook is just the thing to keep me from obsessing over how tiny and perfect my stitches should be…but aren’t. Another place I listen to books is in the car. I have been known to sit in my car after I’ve arrived wherever I’m going just to finish a chapter! I am still a voracious reader, but I have found that the right narrator makes a good book even better.

I love audio books I always have several from the library and listen while I drive, to me iits like listening to a movie I can see it in my head. Certain authors I always listen to and certain authors I always read. I also have only books on my Ipod and listen when I am crafting or cleaning house.
Also, I have enjoyed all of your books and I have Autumn Bride on hold at the library so I can’t wait to pick it up.

I started to answer with a knee-jerk, “No! I want to see/read the words myself!”, but then I remembered the years when I had to make several trips a year between N. Va. and Ky. and how much I enjoyed listening to the Dick Francis books (on tape in those days!). The various narrators made them sound like plays and the miles flew past.
Now I have a very short commute and I love my Kindle, so haven’t listened to audio books in years. Ironically, I just received an email this a.m. announcing this book on Kindle, so if I’m not chosen, I’ll definitely respond in the affirmative!

I enjoy audio books when on a road trip. At home I prefer to read a book. Congratulations and best wishes.

Audio Books are wonderful for travel and I enjoy them very much. In the house I read print books since I am used to that and it is an old habit.

Like you I read much faster than I can be read to. However, I inherited the latest translation of Beowulf on CD and it made the traffic jam on the Jersey Turnpike much more enjoyable. The DC lasted from Connecticut til Pennsylvania. I quilt a little bit and I find the BBC history podcasts great to sew to as I am being “improved” (sorry Bea) while I work. Maybe I will give fiction a turn.

I’ve never listened to an audiobook and haven’t had anyone read to me since I was little. I know some people who have a long commute by car that love to listen to audio books. I think I should get one and try it.

Hi! I love audio books! I love them for me because they make chores and driving into pleasant times. And I love them for my daughter who is dyslexic and who is passionate about books but frustrated by using her eyes to read them. I am so glad you’ve decided to put some of your books into an audio format! Thank you.

Dee, audio only works for me when I’m doing something else with my hands. Thanks for dropping past.
Ella, I can understand that. Since I stopped doing long twice weekly drives, I haven’t listened to audio books nearly as much. but this discussion has inspired me to start up again.
Margot, give it a try. It’s not as distracting as you might think.

Dee F — I admire anyone who hand-stitches patchwork. My mother used to do it and her stitches were so neat and tiny. Mine, not so much — dreadful was the way she and my grandmother used to describe them.(g) So I can see how it would become obsessive. I’ve also sat in the car waiting for a book to finish. Thanks for joining in the conversation.
Thanks for your kind words, Roseanna. I hope the library has Autumn Bride ready for you soon. I love libraries. And thank you for dropping by.

Donna, I haven’t succumbed to the kindle (or any other e-reader) yet, but I’m close. I’ll be at a conference at the end of March and I’ve asked a few friends to bring their e-readers so I can try them out. I still prefer a book, but my house is stuffed with books and I’m running out of room.
Diane, thanks for your kind words.
Pearl, try an audio book next time you’re cleaning out cupboards. magic.

LynS, I love being improved, especially when it’s so painless, as it is with interesting radio programs and audio books. I hadn’t thought of looking for the BBC podcasts — thanks,. We get excellent ABC (Australian version of the BBC) programs, which are often BBC made.
Oh, Beowulf — that sounds so good read aloud. If you read the post I made above, to Janga, that old Prof that I mentioned could quote great screeds of Beowulf at the drop of a hat.
Dianne, try it and see. Use it to make a dreary chore fly. You feel so virtuous afterward. *g*

Minna, they’re excellent for knitting, I’m sure. Thanks for adding to the discussion.
Thanks Laura — it’s great for your daughter, I know, as it must be so frustrating for her. If she’s a natural born story-teller, tell her that several authors I know of battled with dyslexia all their lives, but still became writers.
And BTW I didn’t decide to make The Autumn Bride into an audio book — the audio company and my publisher arrange this — I was pretty much the last to know. Which is why I’m so thrilled. My book was *chosen.*

I’m afraid to listen to books in the car. I tried it once and quickly realized that once I became engrossed I was not paying attention to the road. And at home I really like to read to myself. However they might be just the thing for a monotonous job like scraping, hmm, I’ve got a tub that needs regrouting. Also, audio books were a Godsend for my father once he got macular degeneration. He was a constant reader and grew to love hearing them read aloud.

Just finished reading Angel Knight and I loved it. Adored the characters and their historical values. I was reading how you came to be a fan of audio books and it got me to thinking how I can also incorporate audio books in my life. Angel Knight is the first book I have read of yours and it won’t be the last. I have enjoyed reading it at night when the house is asleep. Congratulations on your new success.

Karin, I imagine they’d be wonderful for anyone with fading eyesight. How hard for someone who was such an avid reader.
Rose, I didn’t write Angel Knight — I think you must be thinking of Susan King, who also blogs with the wenches. She writes wonderful historical novels.

I turned to audio books when I began having to drive quite a long way for work. I was unsure at first, however I loved it. It does depend on the narrator however, if I can enjoy the story or not. Some narrators drone on, yet others sweep me into the story. At times I (as in my paperback reading) am inpatient to finish the story & listen while I cook dinner. I’ve also met quite a few new authors this way. Congratulations on your audio book!

Thanks, Jessika. The narrator does make a huge difference, doesn’t it? i remember listening to a book written by a favorite author, but the narrator had a breathy way of speking that was mildly annoying and then she drove me nuts by mispronouncing several words — I can’t remember what they were now, but they came up often enough that I had to rip it out of the cd player at the time. They might have been historical terms — I can’t recall now, but it was enough to put me off listening to the book.

Sherrie here. Anne, you and the Wenches know how much I love audiobooks. I have a huge collection now–perhaps around 300-400–thanks to some spectacular bulk lot purchases, dirt cheap, on eBay. As a result, I’ve been introduced to some wonderful writers in different genres. I’m now a huge fan of mysteries and action/adventures. One of my favorites is the prolific Clive Cussler, whose action/adventure books are delightfully over the top. Another favorite is the Harry Potter series, narrated by the wonderful Jim Dale. And the historical seafaring adventures of the meticulously researched Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O’Brien, narrated to perfection by the late Patrick Tull. For nonfiction, I highly recommend Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, narrated by the author, at book in March of 2009 (“Living La Vida Locavore”).
I listen to audiobooks nearly every day, and average around 150-200 a year. I rigged up my stereo/CD player with speakers all over the house so that I can listen to audiobooks when cleaning house, washing dishes, cooking, or playing in my craft room. I also have a portable CD player for when I’m gardening and mowing the lawn. I still read at night in bed, but my preference is audiobooks during the day, because it allows me to do other things while I’m “reading.”

My mother lost her vision slowly to macular degeneration. We started on Recorded Books and wore out several cassette players and shoebox recorder/players. After cassettes disappeared we subscribed to two CD mail services, as the local library selection is limited, at least what would suit her taste. What’s troubling now is that many of the books she likes are going out of print on CD, just wearing out, and the services admit that people are not returning them. * While we were still on cassettes, things happened at work, and my job was “dumbed down.” I had more repetitive and data entry type tasks added to my usual more creative work. I started taking her cassettes to work with me, concealed the case and the player, wore small earphones, and man! I could rip through that mind-numbing stuff at warp speed! I tested myself and proved that one hour with no book was less productive than one hour with book. The cassettes were usually about 45 mins, and when I came to the end of one, I would stop that task, take a break, and then do something else for a while, so it also provided a timer and a way to prevent carpal tunnel. I occasionally take a George Guidall (he read The Cat Who books) to my room and let George read me to sleep.

I don’t know where you live, Artemisia, but in New Jersey my father qualified for free book lending service through the state Library for the Blind, and they also provided the players for free. They have a huge collection, including many older books, and every month they sent him a catalog of new publications.

My husband and I drive 11 hours to see my parents, now just my mother, in Melbourne Florida. Thank goodness for books on tape. You cannot imagine how boring I95 is from Florence SC to Melbourne, Florida. Leaving Greensboro, NC we listen to NPR and Diane Rehm.
