Gratitude

Xmas 1

Andrea here, We've reached the 11th day of our Wenchly Christmastide posts, and are winding down the celebration in readiness for starting the new year in earnest. For the most part, we've been having light-hearted fun with them, as befits the festive season, where we raise a toast to the joys of family, friendship and holiday cheer.

Xmas 4But there's also a reflective side to the holidays and the start of a new year, where many of us take some quiet moments to reflect on our blessings and offer up gratitude for all the gifts in our lives. So I thought I'd mention just a few of things that are on my mind, especially as so many people around the globe are facing such difficult and dangerous times.

I'm grateful that I'm extraordinarily lucky to live in a beautiful house, surrounded by peace and plenty. I'm grateful for the love and laughter I have with family and friends. Those connections bring joy in countless ways, large and small. (As our all readers probably sense, one of those joys is being part of the Wenches. We all have become very close friends, and share our ups and downs, which is incredibly special.)

Xmas 2I'm grateful for the beauty of Nature. Every day I try to take a walk and appreciate all the little everyday wonders in the world around me . . . the flowers, the light rippling over Long Island Sound, the majesty of a hawk circling against the clear blue of the sky. That really helps in keeping all the little nigglely worries in perspective.

I Xmas 3'm grateful for the luxury of being able to create a sense of balance in my life. I work hard, but I'm free to adjust the work/play rhythm to stay on an even keel (well, most of the time! Just don't try to speak to me when there's an approaching deadline!)

Those are just a very few things which enrich my life. (Okay, okay, I confess—I have to add chocolate!) What about about you? What are some of the things for which you are grateful?

  1. As I have become more and more of a shut-in due to debilitating arthritis, the more I have come to appreciate the life long habit I have had of counting my blessings. It is the best mental health habit in the world. The saddest people I have known in life are those who don’t know how to do that. They never seem to have enough regardless of how much the actually have.
The thing I am most grateful for is a loving family. From my great nephews and nieces who take my trash can out to the curb and bring it back, to the nephew who cuts my lawn and shops for me to my sisters who visit and check in on me daily. I’m one blessed lady.

  6. Thank you. I woke up feeling sad this morning, partly due to the ongoing crises of the world and partly due to friends with serious health problems and thinking about my own onrushing mortality. But encouraging me to think about blessings is helping. Little things – coffee in the morning, cinnamon toast, the local public library, the Word Wenches, my car that starts up right away when I get into it instead of having to be cajoled, oh lots of good things. So onward into the day! Thank you Andrea.

  11. I’m thankful for my lovely family. Most especially my daughter, who has had a long hard battle with mental illness and is now well on the road to getting her life finally on track. This is wonderful for all of us and I’m so grateful for it!
Have been unwell myself for some time but thankful now that things seem to be looking up.

  16. Mary, you’re so right—feeling grateful is a great gift to have. Negativity is a huge energy drain, and affects your ability to enjoy what you have. It’s very sad that people dwell in the shadows rather than look for the light.
I’m so sorry for the arthritis, but how wonderful that you’re surrounded by love and and such a caring family.

  21. Jeannette, it really hard sometimes not to be affected by the struggles and challenges that Life throws at us. I find taking joy in th iny things makes the larger trouble seem brighter. I love your cinnamon toast! And yes, that first cup of morning coffee! Those things really matter!
I’m so glad the Word Wenches brings a smile to your day! Our readers do the same for us!

  26. I also try to regularly count my blessings — my husband, daughter, and sister begin my list; friends; my relative good health; a roof over my head and food on the table; electricity, running water, the sewer system; and the fact that I’m fortunate to live in a peaceful place all have their place in my list. Chocolate is on a list of its own as are books!
Thank you for your thoughtful post, Andrea.

  31. I once had a roll of paper towels imprinted with, “Life is a celebration of many splendid things. You only have to look to find just a few.” Doesn’t that about sum it up? The joy is in the looking.
And as Lorie Merrero used to say at the end of her Clutter Diet videos, “May you always be grateful for having more than enough.”

  36. Thank you, Andrea, for your beautiful words. Like so many, I am devastated by the pain and horror around us, and ashamed at how little I do personally to try to ameliorate the wrongs. But I am incredibly grateful for your words, and the words of all the wenches and other writers everywhere that make up so many wonderful books and bring solace to me and innumerable others.

  46. In my twice daily prayers, I thank God for my blessings. They vary from day to day, but they always include the fact, I have a place to live, food to eat, clothes to wear, and my best bud, Sonny, a dog I rescued from the streets.
I am extremely grateful that I taught myself to read when I was 4 years old. Now, when my life has changed, and I am no longer as physically active, reading is EXTREMELY important to me. In the past I could do anything that I wanted to do, now not so much.
And although at times I curse it, I am grateful for the internet….I know people from all over the world. Can you believe it?
My computer died the day after Christmas and I had to get a new one with Windows 10. At times, I feel that life as I knew it is over. ( I am not a fan of W 10) But, I am slowly finding ways to get things organized. And I found that without a computer I felt as though I missed so much in the world.
And finally, posts from y’all, and others who help me find books to read, to learn more history, to see places I will never actually see and to hear voices I would never hear without you are all blessings.
So, I thank y’all very much.

  51. Thank you for a lovely post, Andrea. Yes this is the time of year so many of us gather with family and friends. I am so thankful that I was able to spend the Christmas days with my sister and her family as well as my brother. We had a wonderful time being together.
I am grateful that I am able to be a support for many who share my past as well as those who are going through grief for the loss of a loved one. I am grateful for my family and the love we share for each other.
The world is going through some difficult times which I hope will improve this coming year.
Yes I also enjoy the moments I can disappear into a good story – thanks to folks like all of you Wenches.

Books do provide hope and solace to so many, so I’m glad that we Wenches can help be a flicker of light when darkness feels overwhelming.
