Farewell, adieu, arrivederla

Barbie_black_lace From Loretta, via Don Juan

   XVIII
‘Farewell, my Spain!  A long farewell!’ he cried
‘Perhaps I may revisit thee no more,
But die as many an exiled heart hath died,
Of its own thirst to see again thy shore:
Farewell, where Guadalquivir’s waters glide!
Farewell, my mother! and, since all is o’er,
Farewell, too, dearest Julia!–(Here he drew
Her letter out again, and read it through.)

Faretheewell XIX
‘And, oh! if e’er I should forget, I swear–
But that’s impossible, and cannot be–
Sooner shall this blue ocean melt to air,
Sooner shall earth resolve itself to sea,
Than I resign thine image, oh, my fair!
Or think of any thing excepting thee;
A mind diseased no remedy can physic
(Here the ship gave a lurch, and he grew sea-sick).

Nautical_3 XX
‘Sooner shall heaven kiss earth (here he fell sicker)
Oh, Julia! what is every other wo?
(For God’s sake let me have a glass of liquor;
Pedro, Battista, help me down below.)
Julia, my love! (you rascal, Pedro, quicker)–
Oh, Julia! (this curst vessel pitches so)–
Beloved Julia, hear me still beseeching!’
(Here he grew inarticulate with retching.)

True_briton_east_indaiman_1790 XXI
He felt that chilling heaviness of heart,
Or rather stomach, which, alas! attends,
Beyond the best apothecary’s art,
The loss of love, the treachery of friends,
Or death of those we dote on, when a part
Of us dies with them as each fond hope ends:
No doubt he would have been much more pathetic,
But the sea acted as a strong emetic.

Byron

Lord Byron says good-byes so much more entertainingly than I could ever do.

Farewell blog.  Farewell, Wenches.  Yes, this is goodbye from this Wench.  From time to time you’ll see me again but only very occasionally.  My time here has been a fine time, thanks to you.

Brunette_blue Ciao.

  6. Loretta, I’m going to miss not only you but Byron! You and he definitely have something special going on. 🙂
When you drop by on occasion in the future, we’ll break out the tea and cakes. Byron’s liquor would be a bit much. 🙂

  31. Loretta, while you were here, it felt like a continual open house over at your place. But I know how much of an impact that can have on your #1 priority–writing. (And as Mark Twain once said (paraphrasing), “After 3 days, fish and company begin to stink.” *g*
This is worth the sacrifice if it means more Loretta Chase books, but oh … I feel like I should be wearing a black armband! Take care, and God bless.

  41. Jane George, theo, Linda Banche, Mary Jo, margaret, Michelle, Maureen–thank you. Don’t make me get all weepy, OK? I quoted Byron in order to keep the proper level of comic relief.
“are you by chance an ancestor of Byron? The sly humor resonates.” Well, you know, Pat, he was in Albania for a time and he was a very naughty fellow…
liz m, Susan/DC, Virginia, Sherrie Holmes, Janga: Thank you. Believe me, I wouldn’t do it if it weren’t absolutely necessary.
And I am looking forward to turning up from time to time, unexpectedly. But I’m also looking forward to being able to spend more time with my characters. I’ve missed that, and so do the books, else they wouldn’t protest so mightily.

  82. Susan Sarah, you know I’ll be taking you up on your offer–and the Barbies will come with me.__Janice, talpianna, theo, Maggie Robinson, Maya M., thank you and yes, I’m buckling down with the books, wanting to focus creative energy there. __ Susan, Susan speaks truth. My ship will return to port before too long, though not for long. Think of me as–no, not the bad penny–but the Cheshire Cat, reappearing from time to time.__Sharon, Louis, Elyssa Papa, thank you. I’ll look forward to talking about The Last Hellion…and other things…and bringing you a new book next summer.

  86. Loretta- you have a special place in my heart and on my bookshelf. Thanks so much for sharing your humor and insight and your precious time with us. I will never forget the great posts on Venice and dairies and pigs- oh, so many things you shared with us! What is the Italian for “Farewell for now”? Keep in touch!

**What is the Italian for “Farewell for now”**
I’m hoping Arrivederla covers it, but another thing I want to do is get back to the Italian lessons. At this age, it’s too easy to forget if you don’t keep at it. PJ, thank you. I’m really going to miss everybody but at the same time, I’m looking forward to a new phase in my life/career. Let’s see where the wind takes me.

  101. Arrivederci is less informal than the other two expressions, though still used with people who are already known. Nevertheless, it may be used politely when leaving a party of people.
Instead, arrivederla is the polite form addressed to single persons.
So which one of us were you bidding farewell to?
