Fairy Godmother Wenches!

Delia 1 copy Delia, just born

Susie Felber, daughter of Edith Layton (and an occasional and most delightful guest at Word Wenches!), recently gave birth to her second child, a beautiful daughter, Cordelia. Congratulations to Susie and her family! As many of you know, Edith Layton, Wench Extraordinaire, passed on in June, 2009, and never got to see little Delia (though she did suggest her future granddaughter's charming name)…

So today the Word Wenches would like to act as Delia’s fairy godmothers,Sleeping_beauty_margaret_tarrant welcoming her and bestowing upon her a veritable bounty of good wishes, blessings and magical qualities…

(Sleeping Beauty by Margaret Tarrant)

Patricia Rice:

I wish her the good fellowship of friends and family and the capacity to love them for their flaws!

(Rossetti, La Ghirlandata)

Rossetti,_Dante_Gabriel_-_La_Ghirlandata_-_1871-1874

Mary Jo Putney:

I wish for Delia to have masses of thick, wavy goddess red hair like her mother and grandmother, so that whenever she enters a room, everyone will look at her in awe and delight. Just like her mother and grandmother…

Anne Gracie:

I wish her a brilliant sense of humor so she will always find something to laughRackham about. And if we're talking fairy godmothers, I wish her no rats, no mice, no horridly uncomfortable recyclable glass footwear and no dull princes, but a true hero of her own. (Arthur Rackham, Ashenputtel)

Nicola Cornick:Triskelion

I'd like to wish Cordelia the Irish Blessing which I have always thought so beautiful:

May the road rise up to meet her

May the wind always be at her back

May the sun shine warm upon her face

Cara Elliott/Andrea Pickens:

I gift to Cordelia a magic Wench pen, so that stories of love and laughter flow from her grandmotherEncre le marquet and mother to her. It's made of rich amber and gold, colors that reflect the wonderful warmth of Edith and Susie. May she always treasure that creative spirit.

Fairies B&w Jo Beverly:

I wish for Delia the gift of good friends wherever she goes.

Eleanor Brickdale, 1901

 Susan Fraser King:

I wish for Delia the gifts of kindness, creativity and a deep love of books. And may she always have great hair, great shoes, a little sass, perfect timing and uncanny luck!

(illustration, Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale)

Sherrie Holmes, Wench Whipster and Webmistress:

May Delia have fresh flowers every day, birdsong in her window every morning, aPinkroses warm spot in the sunshine every afternoon, the soft chirrup of a good luck cricket on the hearth at sunset, and the scent of roses wafting in through the bedroom window every evening.

The Wench Fairy Godmothers have spoken!

Grimshaw--fairy

Delia now has a bounty of wishes to take with her wherever she goes–and we wish her (and her brother and family too!) one more gift… that of complete happiness. (Grimshaw, Fairy)

If you would like to add a fairy blessing for Edith’s new granddaughter, please do!

  1. Here’s a lovely Irish blessing, from my novel, In Sunshine or in Shadow:
May she always walk in sunshine,
May she never want for more,
And may Irish angels rest their wings beside her door.

  6. My hopes and prayers for Delia are that she will enjoy life to the fullest, as her grandmother did. And that she, too, will have a “face without a frown,” which is the phrase I always associate with Edith.
I have no doubt whatsoever–knowing several members of her family–that she already possesses intelligence, talent, humour, wit, and determination to succeed. And I know also that she has parents who will help her develop these qualities to the fullest.
    She’s already a little beauty!

  11. If little Cordelia is lucky, she will inherit her grandmother’s kind and gracious ways- and then everyone she meets will come to love her as we did Edith.

  21. Dearest Delia –
My multi-fold wishes for you: health, happiiness, peace and love – and much Mazel. An addiction to books. May you live up to your beautiful name. And may you grow up to be a woman who is unforgettable, as your wonderful grandmother, Edith, was.
    Hugs and kisses.

  26. Such lovely, lovely wishes!
Lucky Delia, to have so many fairy godmamas (and godpapas) sending her bushels of good fortune!
I have one more wish – that all the new little babies born recently have this much love and luck surrounding them. I think Delia would give a big (well, a teensy little newborn) thumbs up to sharing the fairy luck around!

  36. Can’t thank you all enough. I miss my mother terribly, especially as she was grandchild crazy and it was horrible caring for her and knowing she wouldn’t make it to meet Delia. Been trying to think of what to say in response and instead of sharing way too much, I’ll just say thank you.
