A special gift

Anne here, hoping you all enjoyed the festive season.

I ended up giving myself an unexpected but very special gift this year. Some of you will remember my lovely Chloe-dog (she of the red feather boa) who died in 2011. I haven't been able to make myself get another dog since then, but last week I was noodling around on the internet and I came across this image. https://www.petrescue.com.au/listings/335294

Millie

Yes, it was that look in her eyes that did it, even though I hadn't planned to get a dog yet. I phoned up and made an appointment to go down and meet her and also be interviewed as a suitable owner. It was a three hour drive, but I enjoy driving, and it's summer here and the weather was perfect so it was a lovely little excursion.

I drove down and met her. She's wiggly and snuggly and sweet-natured and affectionate and eager to please, and we bonded immediately.  I wasn't able to take her home straight away β€” they have a rule that says all rescue dogs must be neutered, so she's going to be spayed tomorrow and I'll pick her up and bring her home a day or two later.

I'm calling her Millie because Amelia, while a lovely name, isn't the sort of name to be yelled across an oval or a dog park.

She's a kelpie-cross β€” kelpies are Australian sheep and cattle herding dogs. They're very smart and agile and active. My Chloe-dog was also a kelpie cross, so I have some idea of what to expect, though of course, all dogs are different.

So I'm looking around my house and garden with an eye to making it puppy-proof, and getting ready for obedience training and lots and lots of walks β€”and lots and lots of laughs. I think we'll be good for each other, don't you?

Millie was the gift I gave myself this year. Did you give yourself a gift? Do you have a pet that enriches your life? Any advice for me about Millie?

  16. I have lived with rescued pets. So:
First – be prepared to be adored because you have saved Millie from loneliness.
Second – be sure you realize that being adored is not a guarantee against the first two weeks of being tested.
Third – be sure you are aware of what a good thing you are doing for both of you.
I have tears, because I believe (even without a bell ringing) that every time someone saves a rescued animal an angel gets a new pet and their wings.

  21. LOL Shannon — thanks — I will teach her first up that shoes are not to be touched. If she's a typical kelpie, she'll be easy to train. But just in case, my lovely red boots from San Antonio are going on a high shelf. πŸ™‚

  26. CONGRATULATIONS to both of you!! I’ll add on to what Shannon said and say “hide everything that you don’t want to be a chew toy!” That and/or find a product like Bitter Apple or Bitter Yuck that you can spray on things to make them taste nasty. Do this before Millie comes home so she doesn’t taste anything she shouldn’t and decide to try again after the bitter spray wears off.
    Have fun!

  31. Thanks, Glenda — that's good advice. I've never used those sprays before. I once was minding a mother dog and her litter of puppies for friends and they'd carefully put this stuff called "dog-off" around all their new plants. Guess which ones the puppies couldn't resist? LOL. We'll see how she goes.

  36. Oh Anne! She looks like the perfect furever friend. There is nothing more rewarding than rescuing a discarded heart. But do keep your favorite slides (beddies, slippers) up, the bathroom doors closed, and your computer cords out of reach. I wish you much joy with you new friend. Hugs! Nina

  41. Thanks, Nina — I have hidden my red cowboy boots that I got in San Antonio in JulyThe electric cords are the things I worry most about — they're everywhere in this old house.
I have given her a rawhide chew ring and when I go out for lunch today she'll have a beef rib to gnaw on. With any luck she'll learn to chew only on bones and legal chew things. πŸ™‚
I've put up a new pic of her on my FaceBook page.
