A Gentle Stranding

WavesSusan here …  after the last few weeks, I am more than ready to be stranded on a desert island for a long, long time. I want quiet, simplicity, sunshine (so drizzly and dreary here), and lots of peaceful solitude. You can come too –there are plenty of uncharted islands and remote spots to go around for all of us. We could find our own archipelago.

What would you bring with you? A stack of keeper books, of course, but what else?

You've been gently stranded – you know that a rescue helicopter or ship is on the way, but it will take a while to reach you, perhaps a week, a month, a year (trust me, I'm tempted!).

Where is this? It's like a paradise. You've washed up on an island with soft white sands, palm trees, lush plants, sunlight and warm, balmy winds, the shushing rhythms of the sea filling the air along with birdsong. This is a special, almost magical place with plenty of fresh water in trickling springs and lots of easy, enjoyable food sources – coconuts, berries, bananas, mangoes and other fruits, nuts and seeds, veggies too, enough to sustain for a long time. No need to fish, but you can if you want to deal with that (no thanks!).

7628636.thbSomeone has been here before – there's a roomy hut, solidly built and beautifully fitted out in the shade of a palm tree grove. It’s a perfect glamping getaway, with fresh linens and soft carpets, a comfy chair, a table, a few dishes. (The outhouse is glamorous too!) The campfire is already laid out with lots of dry kindling. There are candles and a lantern. And lots of silky pillows on the soft bed.

The island has everything to support a gentle existence for quite a while — beautiful beaches, a calm surf at your toes, lovely little pools, glorious dawns and sunsets, lots of warm sun … and higher up, mountains, pine trees, springs and lakes, flowers along the pathways—even crystals and gems in the rocky hills as you walk around your island.

39192565.thbBut it is a deserted island and all, so there's no internet, no email and social media, no news reports. No memes. There's a little crank generator so you can have some electricity if you need it. Otherwise there’s nothing to do but read, write, walk the beaches and follow paths up into the hills, and spend time however you like. You can nibble fruits and nuts and drink lots of cool fresh water (you could even make juice and coconut milk, and find herbs for tea).  You can read on the beach – maybe you’ll make a chair out of fallen branches, grasses and leaves, or maybe you’ll find an old beach chair somewhere in that lovely hut.

109384353.thbSo – what would you want with you for this gentle stranding, this escape and chance to jump off the grid? What’s most important, what are your very favorite things, what might you have in a bag or two that washed up with you? A few favorite books. Notebooks and pens. Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat. Skin lotion, lovely soaps. Sandals, sweater ….

A few of the Wenches have some thoughts on this. One of us is actually away on vacation at the moment, off to some balmy tropical place and experiencing a little of this secluded peacefulness. Here's what the Wenches have to say . . .

Beach and hutAndrea says–  No surprise that books are on the top of my must-have list. And while I wholeheartedly support the no internet-e-mail rule, I would like a connection for my kindle so I would have an unlimited library. (Hey, the days are long and lazy on a desert island!) Like our intrepid Regency travelers, I’d also bring my watercolors and art pads. I’ve neglected doing art, and would love to get back dabbling in painting. I have just one other requirement for the island—it has to have a laid-back beachside bar, with funky music and cool libations, for all of us to unwind after a hard day’s work. Because, you know, writing IS hard work.

MaudNicola says –- For me it would be fresh linen and a comfortable bed. Hammocks are all very well for lazing around in the day whilst I read but I need a proper bed with a memory foam pillow! And a topper if the nights are cool. Yes, there is an emphasis on sleeping here! Also on the list would be my lip balm and hair brush. Oh and Maud, my… ahem… cuddly sloth. I never go anywhere without her, as the photo indicates.

Pat says, quickly – I don't want any phones, texts, or Sunset emails! But I want my e-reader. Here are some photos of Hawaii (and Susan says thanks, thinking this is perfect for our desert island!).

Mary Jo says –- Sorry, but no desert island for me!  I want my beach side bungalow to have a/c, electricity for recharging e-reader, a comfortable bed, and maybe a local cat to move in with us for the duration.  And a few good restaurants nearby.  Indeed, this is exactly what we've had on Virgin Gorda in the BVI.  (Mary Jo is not interested in roughing it!)

Beach

And Susan, me, says –- I want to read, write, draw, wander, meditate and just enjoy the quiet. And sleep. So I’d bring whatever would support that – some favorite books (I could read Mary This rough magic Stewart's books over and over and never be bored), notebooks and pens and pencils, sunscreen (that Irish skin!), my favorite flip-flops, my favorite hand lotion (usually something with a vanilla scent), sunglasses … and a cotton throw to use for a blanket, a light wrap, a covering for my beach chair . . .

Are you ready to totally get away? What would you bring along — and which keeper books would you make sure to have with you?

  1. For starters, my island would have fir trees not palm trees and would be on a lake with loons, ducks, and fish. The island would have deer and moose to watch, along with smaller critters. A generator for electricity. As for what I’d bring to this already furnished cabin, that would be my iPad loaded with books and the keypad so I could write and my own pillows and the cats. I’d only do this in Indian summer, though, when the temperature is around 75 during the day and drops to 60 at night for comfortable sleeping.
Huh. Come to think of it, except for the middle of the lake part, and the fact that the temperature outside is 35 not 75, I’ve pretty much got that right here at home.

  6. I had a vacation much like that many years ago, camping on a beach in the Virgin Islands. I slept in a tent, woke up in the morning, got into my swimsuit and dove into the water with no one around. Then I made coffee on the camp stove. Toilets and cold showers were up the hill. No electricity or telephones or newspapers or noise—just sun, sea, and a pile of paperbacks, mostly mystery stories and long 19th century novels. That’s when I first discovered John Dickson Carr, and I still treasure the memory of The Unicorn Murder.
It was an absolutely wonderful week.

  11. Books. Along with several of you, I would want to be able to use my iPad ereading apps (Nook and Kindle). Thousands of books. YAY! But I’m okay with the no contact with the outside world. Oh and how. Other than that my bag would have coffee tucked inside, my sunglasses, a big hat, a couple essential oils, and my journal. Maybe pencils and a coloring book. When do we leave?

  16. The private get-away idea is great! But I don’t care for completely solitary. I’d like a good friend (or family member — many of my family are also my friends). We’d have quiet times and together times.

  21. Kindle or nook able to download. My fav paperbacks. Running shoes, because I would get in shape and look gorgeous when I came home. An exercise, book loving, debate partner to wile away the days.

  26. Fun topic…I would have to go with the wooded island stranding that Kathy mentioned because bright tropical sun and I don’t get along well. Too glarey and I hide inside.
So…since I’m on a wooded island with cooler temperatures I would need fleece. My favorite fleece blanket and my favorite fleece jacket. Oh yes, and my little fleece mittens and neck warmer.
Actually, I take my fleece to the beach already because you never know when the winds will blow too much and make me cold.
Sunglasses, hat. Proper boots and socks to go hiking around in. Kindle with power banks to recharge it with.
Now if my little hut didn’t have electricity I would hope to be stranded with a solar generator thing to repower my kindle or power banks -they do have those you can go hiking or camping with.
Definitely pen and paper. Dot to dot and puzzle books. Coloring books and pencils. Deck of cards. I love reading but I need to break it up with other activities.
A small task light since I HAVE to have excellent light to work on anything once it is dark.
    Chocolate.
It does sound lovely…expecially being stranded with a like minded person. I’m with Sue…I don’t want to be totally by myself but I wouldn’t want to be stranded with someone that would need to be “entertained” the whole time either!

Again, since this is fantasy, the Helen Kaminski straw hat that Rene Russo wore in the movie Tin Cup. (Can you tell I’m fair-skinned, and that’s being kind!) Other than that, I’m with lots of others on wanting a fully loaded e-reader, with email access deleted. And I’d need a good supply of Lapsang Souchong and lemons. Other than that, I am so there!

I need good hiking shoes and warm jacket and hats and scarves with mits. And as this is fantasy, my allergies would miraculously not bother me the whole time. I’m okay off grid if I have a light source and a good woodstove to cook on. But I want hubby with me! 😉 So that would mean power for his tablet for his books but I prefer hardcopy books. So all my Mary Jo’s and Jayne Anne Krentz in all her myriad personas. Some Roberta Gellis….basically bring my library with me! And craft supplies! And the ability to write so something to keep my laptop charged. And my hubby’s camera -it’s better than mine! 😉 I’d be very happy away from everyone but miserable without hubby. I actually live on an island in the Pacific. And my cousin on the off-grid one… I could happily last a month away from all the daily stresses. Long talks, long walks and long evenings reading or crafting. Bliss!

Bliss!

  50. I’m a northern island girl too. I actually enjoy cloudy days as I get headaches if I spend too long in the sun. But I want my island to be surrounded by ocean. Love those briney breezes. 51. I would certainly bring along either several boxes of books or a Kindle (can one buy a solar charger?) I’d want to bring a good supply of chocolate. Can I bring along my husband? Ooh, and staff would be handy to prepare those island drinks and some delicious food.

  56. An island with fir trees sounds glorious, Kathy Lynn, and makes me think of all the beautiful Scottish islands I have visited over the years where you can watch the pine martens and red squirrels and smell the scent of the pine and listen to the water. It would have to be very warm, though, and not have any midges!

  66. I wouldn’t mind the quiet, and the no phone thing, and lots of books, so my e-reader and a mega powerful charger.
But in general, I just don’t do the beach. Or at least not since the days when I wasn’t worried about skin cancer, oh yes even with the highest SPF I could find, because I’ve had a scare re that and I don’t care to go there again. Used to love the sun for lightening my dull blonde to a lovely lighter shade. (ooo my mother hated that! 🙂 And I love swimming, but give me an indoor, chlorine-clean, clear, water I can see through, thank you. I used to love the heat baking my body right into my bones, but now the heat actually makes me ill. Gosh it’s heck getting old. But as they say, better than the alternative.

  76. Books. Along with several of you, I would want to be able to use my iPad ereading apps (Nook and Kindle). Thousands of books. YAY! But I’m okay with the no contact with the outside world. Oh and how. Other than that my bag would have coffee tucked inside, my sunglasses, a big hat, a couple essential oil

  81. Michelle, One of the reasons I want a Northern Beach is it’s too cold most of the time to “sun worship” and I don’t tan anyway. Now if my freckles got together…I’d be tanned then! But I prefer the covered-up type of beaches where if you can get out of the wind it’s not AS cold! lol 😀
And I like getting older ’cause it’s definitely better than the alternative!! 🙂
